Consolidated Library Education Center

Construction Cost: US $19,500,000 Form 1391

Blair Remy, contracted to URS, has designed a Consolidated Library Education Center (LEC) with an architectural vernacular that features a contemporary interpretation of classical elements on an otherwise traditional architectural envelope. Large window walls are included to provide visual access from most of the library reading and stack areas to the outdoors, allowing for beautiful views and natural lighting. Historic elements in keeping with the Andrews AFB Design Guide include brick and custom stone banding as well as pitched standing seam metal roofs. The concept sub-area direction of the LEC centers around a main street pedestrian mall concept developed by the Base and referred to as the Strategic Development Plan, 2006. Space is required for storing and issuing books, pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, maps and records. Space is also required for public use computers and reading/study area. Education, interaction areas, administrative areas, support areas are included in the Education Center. The 56,963 SF (5,292 SM) facility can be used by other components on an “as available” basis. The LEC will be composed of a one-story library separated by an entry foyer from a two-story education facility that supports the architectural theme of the Base, consistent with the Air Mobility Command Architectural Compatibility Plan for Andrews AFB (ACP). The dual entry was designed to support the perception of a primary entry facade on both the pedestrial main street mall side of the building and the user parking lot located on the opposite side of the building.
